Governor Leon's Log

Hello, Team

I want to thank all the clubs that were represented at the convention. I also want to thank all the individual Lions and guests that made the banquet a memorable experience. Your support was absolutely the greatest! Your generosity was awesome. You gave over $700.00 in ticket sales. That money will go to the camp to support the children of Texas. You supported Cypress Springs in their sale of Lion Garvis Gilbert pins and books. They made over $700.00 and that money also will go to the camp in memory of PDG Garvis. You make me so proud to be a Lion!!

Our year is moving at a fast pace and will soon be at a close. However, there are still some things that need to be done.

First, is your club a 100% club in dues and charities? If you have not met this goal yet, you still have time. Talk this over with your club and see if you can’t meet this goal. All 100% clubs will receive a patch for your banner at Lion Becky’s first cabinet meeting. Therefore, plan to have a representative of your club there to receive it.

Second, has your club sent in itsPU101 report? Remember, Lion Becky needs this information ASAP in order to get her directory completed. Also, International needs this information in order to get your new officers a password for reporting online. Lion Terry reminded us at the convention that International encourages online reporting instead of paper reporting.

Third, will you attend the State Convention May 25-27? If at all possible, please attend and represent our District. There will be many opportunities to learn about Lion activities. You will also get to hear Lion Jimmy Ross outline his plans for LCI next year when he becomes Texas’ own LCI President.

Fourth, does your club have a camper for our session beginning June 11? We need to get more campers registered and ready to travel. We have space for 40 and at this time only have 15 registered. Make this your club’s highest priority. Kids are out there in every community. Let’s make sure they are served.

Fifth, are you planning to attend the International Convention in Boston 6/30-7/4? What a great place to spend July 4! AND what a great opportunity to see a Texas Lion inducted as President of LCI. Try to go. It will be great! If you are planning to attend and need tickets to the Texas breakfast, contact me. I can get them for you.

Sixth, is your club +one in membership? This was an International goal that our District embraced wholeheartedly. We do have several clubs that are +one. You still have time to be one. Go out and ask your neighbor, co-worker, friend, or relative to join you as a member of the greatest service organization in the world. So many District throughout the world have a minus in membership. Our District has had a plus all year. PLEASE keep it up. We have led Texas in new members all year. Let’s end the year in that same position. Don’t drop any more members and go out and get some new ones. We can do it!!!

Seventh, has your club planned its installation of officers meeting? If not, it is time to get that in the works. Make it a special event and be sure that each officer understands his responsibility to his club, district, state, and international. Be sure that communication concerning all matters be stressed. All club members deserve to have all available information given to them. If you need someone to install your officers, contact me and I will be happy to help you find the "right person" for your club.

Eighth, has your club sent its money for payment of recipe books? Most clubs have but we still need to collect from a few. Remember, the money goes to pay District 2-X2’s portion of the International parade expense. Please send a club check to cover the books. Then, as your club sells the books, reimburse your treasurer. You might even want to use the books for gifts to speakers that your club invites to the meetings.

Ninth, can your club find a new way to serve? Your community needs your help. Find a way to make your community better. Then be sure others hear about it. That will help you gain new members.

Tenth, are you planning on entering the youth contests next year? As DGE Becky’s Youth Chairman, you will be hearing from me a lot. I firmly believe in getting our young people involved.

So - thanks for everything, but, now, let’s get back to work.

Governor Leon

Becky's Bits

Dear Fellow Lions,

Can you believe that this Lions year is almost over? Our District Convention was just held and we had a great turnout. The State and International Conventions will be here in a few weeks. But wait, we still have lots to do before then.

1. We only have 10 clubs that haven’t filed their PU101’s. Club Presidents make sure your Secretary has filed your club report. We have two clubs that I have received emails with the information, but International still has no record of your reports. Make sure that they get a copy as well.

2. District 2-X2 is still showing a plus in membership. It’s a small lead and we can maintain the increase if you can hold your drops until after July 1st. If you have carried them for months, what’s a few more weeks? Let’s all pull together to keep this increase in membership, not only for Governor Leon, but for our District as well.

3. Make sure that your club officers are installed properly and know what their job duties are for your club. Becky’s Bits, continued

4. Make sure that your new officers are aware of our district leadership training dates. They are: Saturday, June 10th and 17th in Mt. Pleasant at Chapel Hill School from 9-12. Each day will have complete training for all Club Presidents and Vice Presidents, Secretary/Treasurer, Region and Zone chairmen. Training is open to all club members. Hands on computer training will be given to club secretaries. I encourage all club officers to attend one of these training dates.

5. Have new officers plan on attending the first Cabinet meeting for 2006-7. It will be in Bonham. Details are still being worked out. Watch the next newsletter for more information.

6. I am working of filling a few cabinet positions. If you would like to serve on the district level, please contact me. Most of the positions require just a couple of hours a month writing up articles for our monthly newsletter, while some may require more time. Call me if you would like to help our district this next year.

I would like to thank everyone who is making a difference in their community by being a Lion. Without you, so many communities would be doing without. You have answered the call that Helen Keller placed so long ago... You are the Knights of the Blind and "We Serve" for all the World to See.

Peace and Blessings to all of you.

DGE Becky Whitenack

Youth Events and Happenings

There were three outstanding Queen Contestants at the District Convention: Carey Ashcroft from Judson Lions Club, Courtney Francis from Longview Lions Club, and Anouk Obermann from Mar-Tex Lions Club. Judges Sandy Toussaint and Suzanne Planchard judged the girls on poise and verbal expression. They were very impressed with all three girls and stated that each one could graciously represent our District. The one selected for this year was Anouk Obermann. She was presented to the audience by Lion Alan Grantham of Marshall Noon Lions Club. She very willing accepted the microphone from Governor Leon to express her appreciation to the Lions of District 2-X2 for this honor. She will graduate from Marshall High School this May. She is making her plans to further her education by attending college.
