Governor Leon's Log

Hello, Team

Lion Nancy and I just returned from the Austin Lions Forum and it was a good one. There were six District 2-X2 Lions there so THANK YOU for supporting our district. One of our Lions, James Cammack from Judson , was given a pin from PID Al Brandel for being the Lion with the most years of service at the forum. Congratulations, Lion James.

Now for the convention. It is only about 6 weeks away. We need you there. Have you registered? The registration fee is less if you will only register before April 15. You will have a great time. Good food, good fun, and good fellowship. Be there. You will not only have a pleasurable week-end but you will also help with the district business. We have a great ID as our main speaker. He is well recommended and comes from Canada so let’s show our interest and dedication to Lions.

Friday night will be the Parade of Banners. We need at least one representative from every club to display their club’s banner. Surely your club is proud to be a part of this event. Your food will be free. Come and let us see your support of our district. Be there, we promise you will enjoy it!

NOW, let’s talk business!! April 10 is the deadline for applications for the Lions Camp summer program. Guess how many applicants District 2-X2 has now! FOUR (4)!!! We have a contract for a 40 passenger bus at $3700.00. We need to fill that bus. I am sure that our district has children that are in need. Why can’t we find them? Go to your pediatricians, school nurses, school special education departments. Let’s find those kids. We talk about serving. This is one of your greatest chances to serve children of your community. PLEASE don’t miss the bus. Get the kids of your community to this great facility that your club’s dollars support..

Has your club sponsored a hole for the golf tournament in Kerrville in August? We are encouraging all District 2-X2 clubs to do this in memory of PDG Garvis Gilbert. He is the only District 2-X2 Lions Camp President. Can you help us? It is only $100.00 and is a great tribute for a great Lion. Call PDG Jack Wakin. He will take your information and help you do this.

It is a great way to say “THANK YOU” to someone who gave his all for Lions.

One more item of great importance!! Lion Nancy NEEDS your club’s outstanding member information. We are attempting to have a Who’s Who in District 2-X2. Nancy needs your member’s name, a bio, and a picture. Then that person needs to be at the convention to receive their award. Can’t you help us with this? This book WILL BE published. Will your club have a member to represent it? The choice is yours.

I look forward to seeing you at the District Convention. I hope you will enjoy it. Plan to play dominoes or bridge. Watch a style show or flower arrangement demonstration. Learn how to “Country Line Dance”. Just have a great time!

Thanks,

Governor Leon

News Around the State

Good morning,

I am writing you this morning in order to invite you to attend Spring Spin (and to request you help us promote the event).

Six Flags Fiesta Texas (San Antonio) is using their Season Opener to benefit charities - and so happens - Texas Lions Camp is one. On March 5th (Sunday) TLC will receive $5.00 of each ticket sold through our website, www.lionscamp.com.

Tickets are also half price admission when purchased at our site, and you will receive an additional free ticket that can be used during the month of September. Upgrades to season passes are also available in combination with this offer. This offer ends on February 28, 2006 so hurry - logon to www.lionscamp.com today and purchase yours. Hope to see you there - have a great day!

Sincerely,
Stephen S. Mabry, CAE, CFRE
Executive Director

There is still time to participate in the Ross Rangers Raffle contest. If your club can buy one ticket to support the inauguration of Lion Jimmy Ross as President of Lions International, I encourage you to do so. If your club wins any of the prizes, you could then use it as a fund raiser by re-raffling it. Our District is behind all others in this endeavor. Please do your part if at all possible. Call PDG Bill Hurst. Thank you!!

News From International

Lions Day With the UN 2006

Last April, many districts celebrated Lions Worldwide Induction Day and hundreds of new members around the world were simultaneously inducted into Lions clubs. Press releases announced the strength of our organization and together we recognized the importance of being a part of the leading service organization in the world.

This year we will continue the tradition by celebrating Lions Worldwide Induction Day on April 29, 2006.

Bringing new Lions into the club must be done with thought and care. To make planning easier and the event memorable, Lions Clubs International will provide:

Lions Worldwide Induction Day Planning Guide – This comprehensive guide includes program suggestions and recruiting ideas to share with your clubs. To receive a copy, submit the attached form.

Certificates and Press Releases – Participants will receive free commemorative certificates and press releases to honor new members and publicize the event.

If Lions Worldwide Induction Day occurs during your district or multiple district convention, add the event to your program schedule. Involving new members in district activities increases their knowledge and commitment to your district programs. If your convention is scheduled for another time, contact the club presidents within your district to organize a special even.

Always encourage your clubs to continue their current induction ceremonies to support year-round growth. Lions Worldwide Induction Day is a celebration to recognize members who were recruited throughout the year.

Join us as we celebrate our growth today and share our success with others!

Yours Truly,
Dr. Ashok Mahta
International President

The Importance of our Words

Recently, I have learned more regarding the “fruit of our lips”. Our words are alive and carry great significance. Do we sometimes wonder if our circumstances are more than we can bear? Exactly, what are we saying about our circumstances is precisely where we are positioned. Why can’t we be “above” the circumstances. Why are we “scared to death”? Blessings and cursing come from the same mouth, but it shouldn’t be. Do we pay attention to the words we speak? What is the impact when the spoken word touches another? Is our conversation full of negativity and turn people off?

Lions, be aware that you are not only watched, but listened to. Are we back-biting, or uplifting one another? Are we supporting, encouraging, and being part of a team? District 2-X2 is growing; so obviously, much support is going on. New people are coming on board, so be prepared to show them the true meaning of “lionism”.

It is incredible when so many terrific people come together to LEARN to walk as a team; to produce results for community problems. Coming together requires “willingness to change” and willing to become teachable.

Be blessed in all that you do! As with your everyday living, be diligent in your organization. Our Leadership has been incredible and I know they appreciate you. May God bless you and your family.

Chaplain Conley Keasler

Hello, I am Lion Barbara Duncan and I was born in Galveston, TX. I have held many positions outside the home including newspaper advertising for the Mt. Pleasant Daily Tribune and the Longview News. I served 2 years as secretary of the Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce. Currently, my husband, Lion Jim, and I own and operate Lil Abner’s Cleaners & Laundry in Mr. Pleasant. My title now is homemaker and "full time volunteer".

I served 3 years as the first woman to be elected to the Board of Trustees of the Mt. Pleasant Independent School District..

I have been a member of the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club since 1997. I was the first female member and have served as Lion Tamer, 1st VP and President. I was the first woman president of the Club and the only person to have served 2 consecutive terms as president. I currently serve on the Board of Directors and as chairman of the Lions Club Talk-a-thon, which is our largest fun raiser. My club has honored me with a Life Membership to the TX Lions Camp and a Melvin Jones Fellowship. I am also a member of the Century Club of the TX Lions Camp. In 2001 I was awarded the International President’s Certificate of Appreciation. I am currently serving my 2nd term as a member of the Board of Directors of the TX Lions Camp and District Chairman of the PDG Garvis Gilbert Memorial Walk for the Camp. I would love to come present a program to your club or any other group or organization that you feel would be interested and benefit from knowing about our camp.

I am a Charter Member of the Mt. Pleasant Lioness Club and serve as its president. We concentrated mainly on providing Christmas gifts for children and families that otherwise would not have a Merry Christmas.

On Jan. 18 at the Annual Banquet & Awards Night of the Chamber of Commerce of Mt. Pleasant & Titus County, Jim and I were shocked, honored, and humbled to be presented with the "Lifetime Achievement Award".
