Governor Leon's Log | |
Hello, Team - This year of Lions is moving so quickly that I cannot begin to comprehend where the time has gone. You know the old saying, "Time flies when you are having a good time." I will say that it applies to my year as Governor. However, we still have many things to accomplish.
First, we have our third Cabinet meeting in Paris on Feb. 18. We will be hearing from PDG Jim Jones who is serving as 3rd Vice President of the PDG Assoc. He will give us some tips about purchasing a trailer for our district as well as telling about some exciting adventures traveling to International Conventions. Be there to hear him.
Second, we have a wonderful event planned for the last week of March when we have Charter night for our new club in Ore City. I know you will want to be there to wish them much success. I will let you know details as soon as they are complete.
Third, we have our District Convention in Marshall on the last week-end of April. Your club needs to be there to vote on the important issues facing our District next year. Besides, it is going to be fun. There are many activities planned and the expense will be minimal, thanks to many hard working Lions. Early registration will save you even more money so be sure to get that in by April 15.
Fourth, the State Convention will be the last week-end in May in Abilene. I know it will be a great time with an opportunity to hear Texas’ own Lion Jimmy Ross and even Texas’ own Governor Rick Perry. I’m sure you want to be there.
Sixth, we have the International Convention in Boston the last week-end in June. I hope you will make a concerted effort to attend this year to watch Lion Jimmy Ross be sworn in as Lions International President.
That is 6 big events. However, that is not all.
PU-101 reports will need to be returned to International by April 15 so your club needs to be making plans for that. Be sure you send your report to International so that your new officers will receive their passwords for the reporting section of the website. Also be sure to send a copy to VG Becky. She will need to get her directory planned and to the printer so that it will be ready when she gets back from Boston.
Clubs need to get the biographical information and picture to Lion Nancy for their own Governor’s Award Recipient by April 1. She is working on a great publication that you won’t want to miss. PLEASE have your club represented by your special club member.
TX Lions Camp workdays are filling up fast. If you plan to attend, get your application in soon. The April work day is already full.
So, you can see, we still have a lot to do. I do want to thank each of you for all that you have done to make this year a great one. Most important of all, thank you for your dedication in recruiting new members. We have been in the + column every month. For that, I truly thank you. Our District is better because of you.
We have had more clubs pay charities than we have before, so for that I also thank you. Believe this, your money goes for many great causes. All the charities help to sponsor Texans (children and adults), even LCIF has given a lot of money to help Texas Lions this year when we faced the hardships of Katrina and Rita. Please remember, we can never be an island to ourselves. There may come a time when our own community will need help, and Lions organizations will be there.
We have had more youth involvement than in many years. Thanks for that too. Our youth are our future. Let’s bring them into this great organization.
THANK YOU, LIONS
Governor Leon

Dear Fellow Lions:
Dear Fellow Lions, As I sit writing this note, I am inspired by the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics and all the men and women who have a dream. The dream of winning a medal. Not just any medal, but a Gold one. It’s not always just for them; sometimes it’s for their Country as well. It’s for the others who have come before them and failed and the ones to come afterwards. They give it their all to be at the Olympics and to compete against the best in the World.
We as Lions need to look at these Olympians going for the "Gold" and go for the "Gold" ourselves. What we do in our community is not for ourselves; it’s for others in our community. Lions are the leaders of our communities. We need you to get involved in club projects that will serve your community. These projects might be small ones that hardly anyone would notice. Another project could be so huge that it takes the whole community to help complete it. No matter what it is, it’s a project you do for your community. Then and only then is when we get our Gold Medal. True, it may not come with them playing the national anthem for you and actually presenting you with a Gold Medal, but you will know it in your heart and that’s where it counts. You have a dream for your community. Share it with others. Then go for the Gold and make a difference in your community.
We only have a few more months left in this year. I ask that you not drop any more members this Lions calendar year. As of December 31st, we were still showing a plus in membership. With your help we can achieve our District goal of being one plus in membership this year.
Next, we need each club to put together a nominating committee to elect new officers for the 2006-7 year. International will be sending each club secretary the PU-101 report. This report needs to be completed as soon as possible. Club Presidents, I ask that you follow up with your Secretary to be sure the forms are completed and mailed before the deadline.
Keep up the good work you are doing in your community. Go for the Gold and keep the flame of Lionism alive in your community.
VDG Becky Whitenack
Thanks to the Marshall Noon Lions Club, Friday night dinner at the District Convention will be "free of charge". The dinner will be casual and pool side, weather permitting. Get your reservations in early!

There is still time to participate in the Ross Rangers Raffle contest. If your club can buy one ticket to support the inauguration of Lion Jimmy Ross as President of Lions International, I encourage you to do so. If your club wins any of the prizes, you could then use it as a fund raiser by re-raffling it. Our District is behind all others in this endeavor. Please do your part if at all possible. News From International
Lions Day With the UN 2006
| |
Last April, many districts celebrated Lions Worldwide Induction Day and hundreds of new members around the world were simultaneously inducted into Lions clubs. Press releases announced the strength of our organization and together we recognized the importance of being a part of the leading service organization in the world.
This year we will continue the tradition by celebrating Lions Worldwide Induction Day on April 29, 2006.
Bringing new Lions into the club must be done with thought and care. To make planning easier and the event memorable, Lions Clubs International will provide:
Lions Worldwide Induction Day Planning Guide – This comprehensive guide includes program suggestions and recruiting ideas to share with your clubs. To receive a copy, submit the attached form.
Certificates and Press Releases – Participants will receive free commemorative certificates and press releases to honor new members and publicize the event.
If Lions Worldwide Induction Day occurs during your district or multiple district convention, add the event to your program schedule. Involving new members in district activities increases their knowledge and commitment to your district programs. If your convention is scheduled for another time, contact the club presidents within your district to organize a special even.
Always encourage your clubs to continue their current induction ceremonies to support year-round growth. Lions Worldwide Induction Day is a celebration to recognize members who were recruited throughout the year.
Join us as we celebrate our growth today and share our success with others!
Yours Truly,
Dr. Ashok Mahta
International President

OWE NO MAN ANYTHING...
Romans 13:8 - "Owe no man anything, but to love one another; for he that loves one another has fulfilled the law."
The word "owe" means to be under obligation (ought, must, should). And is ongoing; never to cease, nor to be compromised.
There are several areas in our lives that involves "love".
1 - Love of God - putting Him first in all areas of our lives.
2 - Love of Spouse - priority. Above children, other family such as Mom and Dad, job, career, entertainment, personal wants.
3 - Love of Family - Above things.
1st Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is patient - is kind - does not envy - does not boast - is not proud - is not rude - not self-seeking - not easily angered - keeps no records of wrongs - does not delight in evil - rejoices with truth - protects - always trusts - always perseveres - never fails.
This being the "love" month, our focus is often on concern for others with hearts/valentines/candy/flowers or other gifts. Why do we honor this greatest gift just one day of one month of each year? Actions of others, has led us to judge the strength of a person’s love, and forgiveness depends on the size of the gift.
Service requires Lions to operate in the gift of Love.
Do we judge others, be quick to point out wrongs, show prejudice toward others regarding sex, color, qualifications, financial, backgrounds?
Life is too short , not to live!
Be blessed!
Chaplain Conley Keasler

Hello, I am Lion Barbara Duncan and I was born in Galveston, TX. I have held many positions outside the home including newspaper advertising for the Mt. Pleasant Daily Tribune and the Longview News. I served 2 years as secretary of the Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce. Currently, my husband, Lion Jim, and I own and operate Lil Abner’s Cleaners & Laundry in Mr. Pleasant. My title now is homemaker and "full time volunteer".
I served 3 years as the first woman to be elected to the Board of Trustees of the Mt. Pleasant Independent School District..
I have been a member of the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club since 1997. I was the first female member and have served as Lion Tamer, 1st VP and President. I was the first woman president of the Club and the only person to have served 2 consecutive terms as president. I currently serve on the Board of Directors and as chairman of the Lions Club Talk-a-thon, which is our largest fun raiser. My club has honored me with a Life Membership to the TX Lions Camp and a Melvin Jones Fellowship. I am also a member of the Century Club of the TX Lions Camp. In 2001 I was awarded the International President’s Certificate of Appreciation. I am currently serving my 2nd term as a member of the Board of Directors of the TX Lions Camp and District Chairman of the PDG Garvis Gilbert Memorial Walk for the Camp. I would love to come present a program to your club or any other group or organization that you feel would be interested and benefit from knowing about our camp.
I am a Charter Member of the Mt. Pleasant Lioness Club and serve as its president. We concentrated mainly on providing Christmas gifts for children and families that otherwise would not have a Merry Christmas.
On Jan. 18 at the Annual Banquet & Awards Night of the Chamber of Commerce of Mt. Pleasant & Titus County, Jim and I were shocked, honored, and humbled to be presented with the "Lifetime Achievement Award".
 | Youth Events and Happenings |
District 2-X2 was represented in Kerrville by two young ladies from Marshall High School. One read her essay on diabetes and the other participated in the competition of Outstanding Youth. Even though neither girl won the competition, they represented our district well. If you are in need of a great program, think about inviting one of these girls. I think you will be very pleased. Then, begin working now for even more involvement of our youth next year.’
Don’t forget that we are having a Queen’s Contest at the District Convention. Send us the name of your Queen soon.
