Governor Leon's Log | |
Hello, Team - To give you the most anxiously awaited information first, International has moved the location of the 2006 convention t oBoston with the dates set for June 30-July 4. This may be a change in setting but I hop you will all continue to consider attending the convention. We will still be installing Texas' own Lion Jimmy Ross as the new international President. Let's give him and the Lions of the World a huge demonstration. As soon as hotels, etc, are designated, it will appear on the website. Be sure to check in often.
I just returned from the US/Canada forum and received some good training and information there. I also met our guest speaker for our own District Convention. He came highly recommended by PID Marshall Cooper and I think we are in for a treat.
I hope all will plan to attend the next cabinet meeting. I know Linden is planning a great day for us. We will have a wonderful time and hope everyone will be there to share it.
Keep the youth essay, speech, and most outstanding youth contests in mind. The topics were given in the Oct. newsletter. Peace poster deadlines are coming up. Let's get the youth of our district involved.
The Council of Governors' Meeting in Brenham is coming up, too. Hope to see you there.
Yours in Lionism,
Governor Leon

Becky's Bits | |
Dear Fellow Lions:
Cool weather is finally here! That must mean fall is just around the corner and all you Great Lions must be hard at work, working on fall projects. Many of you Lions in the East Texas area have been doing a great job over the past couple of months helping those in need of aid from the hurricanes. My hat goes off to each and everyone of you who have made a difference in the lives of so many in need. Texans have shown the world what it means to help others and not always wondering, what am I going to get in return. That's what Lionism is all about. I hope that you have seen many others in your community step up to the plate and help. If so, there is your next lead on asking someone to join Lionism.
We serve, that's the Lions Mott. What are you going to serve? We (and I mean all of us in the State of Texas) need to get back to the basic of Lionism. When was the last time your club held a fundraiser or did a service project? Did you know that serving your community can take only a few minutes. Here's a couple of simple ways to help. One Saturday morning, on or two of you Lions go to the nearest laundry mat (with your Lions vest on) and pay for the washer and dryer for everyone in the place. Pick a yard that is in need of some loving care where elderly folks live and do some yard work for them at no charge. Plant flowers somewhere in need of a little face lift. Christmas is coming up and the weekend after Thanksgiving is the busiest shopping time. Wear your vest and hit the mall, Wal-Mart or grocery store and help folks by taking their shopping bags to their car. This is also great if the weather is bad during the time that you offer to help with your umbrella so they and their packages do not get wet. Serving others can be simple or it could take a whole lot. The choice is yours, all I ask is that you get up and walk across your community and see what needs to be done and how you as a Lions Club can make a difference in your town.
We have found out this week that it is official, the next International Convention will be held in Boston and not in New Orleans. We are still in great need of many Lions attending the Convention to show our support for the next President, our own Lions Jimmy Ross. I encourage each club to try to find a way to send their out going President and/or others to the International Convention.
VDG Becky Whitenack

LCIF/Lions Aiding Victims of Katrina
Lions and LCIF are helping victims of Hurricane Katrina on a grand scale. Lions in the affected areas are staffing shelters and collecting funds, food and supplies. Lions elsewhere are donating money to LCIF and gathering supplies. LCIF has committed US$270,000 so far for hurricane relief and is coordinating the relief effort. LCIF also has a sample press release to help Lions clubs publicize their relief efforts.
LCIF awarded a US$200,000 Major Catastrophe Grant within days of the disaster. LCIF is focusing its short-term relief in three areas: 1.) providing shelters with unmet substantial needs such as food, clothing, personal hygiene items and bedding, 2.) offering health services such as eyeglass distribution, and 3.) meeting needs of Lions camps and facilities housing victims of the disaster.
LCIF also has awarded seven US$10,000 Emergency Grants for Lions in the affected areas to issue vouchers for food, water and clothing to hurricane victims.
LCIF has set up a designated fund for Lions and others who wish to help the hurricane victims. LCIF's normal policy is that Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) recognition is not allowed for designated donations. To encourage donations for Katrina victims, the LCIF Board of Trustees has amended this policy. Donations sent to LCIF for Hurricane Katrina relief from Aug. 29 to Nov. 30, 2005 (postmarked by Nov. 30), are eligible for MJF recognition. To count toward an MJF, the donation must be a single US$1,000 payment from a donor. The Melvin Jones Fellow does not have to be named when the donation is made.
LCIF has received US $1.4 million from Lions for Hurricane Katrina Relief.
LCIF Chairperson Clement Kusiak has appointed a steering committee of four leading Lions from the four states most affected by the tragedy to serve as liaisons between LCIF, Lions in the disaster areas and Lions who want to help. LCIF also has set up a Web-based Help Link to connect Lions who want to volunteer time or donate goods with Lions in the affected areas who are staffing shelters or otherwise helping victims.
Note: District 2-X2 was awarded one of the grantions mentioned above. We only have 30 days in which ot use the money and then the unused portion will have to be returned to LCIF. Send your receipts to Governor Leon immediately for a refund.

Chaplain's Corner by Lion Conley Keasler District Chaplain | |
A few days ago, I was invited to share with the Longview Lions Club. My husband, Harmon and I had a wonderful time. Their invitation was in regards to a special event.
Longview Lions Club President John Dilworth passed away. Please put their Club on your prayer list. Of course, Lions are always prepared for the unexpected and perform with excellence.
"If this day was your last, would you leave memories of excellence?''
Just in the previous situation, Lion President John attended the Wednesday noon meeting at Johnny Casey's Seafood Restaurant; business was as usual. No additional exceptional events; but the continued discussion of Hurricane Katrina, and the devastation she left behind. Lion President John visited the emergency shelter in Longview during the weekend (before the Wednesday meeting), and assisted in every way possible.
Thursday arrived in the usual manner; however some discomfort made him seek medical help.
Thursday evening, John passed away. Many in his club were surprised at the news as he "wasn't sick". Every moment of every day (& night), we are making memories with those we come in contact.
Whether it is just for that one meeting or for continued relationships, we separate with a memory. Will you part with kind words, consideration, excitement, anticipation of seeing each other again; or anger, criticism, jealously, a disagreement, abuse?
Eph. 4:25 & 26: "Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not; Let not the sun go down upon your wrath."
We are not guaranteed tomorrow! Is there a grudge, an offence, isolation, disagreement, or misunderstanding separating you from your family, friends, associates, or acquaintances?
Ps. 37:8: "Cease from anger, and forget wrath."
Remember that even these situations could prevent your communication with God! Can we afford to waste time before we reconcile? "If I had only" or "I wish I had", are portions of regrets that many of us hold until too late.
Looking forward to visiting with you.

District Convention News
Due to Easter holidays, our District Convention has been changed to April 28-30. It will still be in Marshall at the East Texas Convention Center adjacent to the LaQuinta Motel. However, Kilgore will continue to hold their 75th anniversary on Friday, April 7.
Always Wanted To Take A Cruise?
Now is the time, according to the Paris Founders Lions Club. The club has scheduled a 7-day Western Caribbean cruise leaving from Galveston on May 7, 2006, as a club fundraiser. The sailing will be on Carnival Cruise Line's ship The Elation. The cruise is open to everyone, not just Lions Club members.
The first port of call is Progreso, the gateway to Mexico's Yucatan, home of some of the most beautiful beaches in the world as well as fascinating Myan ruins. Next is Cozumel, a gorgeous tropical island with a wealth of beaches, sightseeing attractions and duty-free shops. The final destination is Belize, a country renouned for its wildlife sanctuaries, world-famous zoo and breathtaking ocean vistas.
Cabine prices are from $548 per person for an interior cabin, $648 for an oceanview cabin, and $1318 for a balcony cabin. Prices include all accommodations, meals, and shipboard entertainment. There are reduced prices available for third and forth persons in a cabin. For those who may be traveling alone, arrangements can be made to share a cabin.
The first deposit of $50 per person is due by Octember 30, the second deposit of $200 is due December 6, and the balance is due February 19. Deposits may be made by check, cash, or credit card.
Arrangements are being made for a charter bus to and from Galveston for a slight fee (guaranteed to be lower than the cost of gas and parking for a private vehicle!).
Detailed information is available from Lion Mike Pendleton at Paris Travel Consultants, 903-785-0017.
